A new report has revealed that worldwide subscriptions to xDSL broadband services increased by a further eight million in the first three months of 2005.

According to information produced for the DSL Forum by analysts Point Topic, the total number of global xDSL broadband subscribers reached 107 million by the end of March this year.

This figure subsequently boomed to 115 million by early June, of which, 840,000 were new customers in the UK.

Britain's share of new subscriptions to xDSL broadband services therefore reached 20 per cent, helping augment the UK's total to almost five million.

This sum means the UK is now the fastest-growing established DSL market.

The USA added more than 1.36 million subscribers and Canada gained almost 165,000 to total more than 2.8 million, ISP Review reports.

Other fast-growing stages included many at an earlier stage of market development. Turkey saw growth in the number of DSL subscribers of 39 per cent, whilst Thailand saw the number of subscribers grow by more than a quarter (27 per cent), Poland saw 25 per cent growth, Mexico 19 per cent, and Portugal 18 per cent.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
