Following the devastating attacks on London's transport network millions turned to the Internet to receive up to date information and reassure loved ones of their safety.

Some Internet sites reported that they received more than a month's worth of traffic in a few hours.

E-mail also showed its ability to communicate reliably as people turned to the medium after mobile phone networks struggled to cope with the levels of demand.

At peak time the BBC News website reports serving up more than 1.7 gigabits of data every second.

Other news sites such as the Guardian and Sky news all reported massively increased traffic numbers as people from all over the world focussed their attention on London.
