A new £19,000 computer suite promises to extend the benefits of computing to pensioners in Sunderland.

Residents at High Grindon House sheltered accommodation complex in Sunderland, who are all aged 60 and over, will have access to five PCs, all with Internet and email access. The suite was constructed after the tenants themselves requested it.

Margaret White, head of care and support services at Sunderland housing group, commented: "I am delighted we and City of Sunderland has been able provide the residents of High Grindon House with these new facilities, which I am sure they are keen to get as much use from as possible."

She added, "The space the computer suite and relatives' room now occupies was previously under-used, but these new facilities will meet their specific needs."

Residents will be able to use the computers to research their family histories and talk over long-distances to relatives, as well as for a whole host of different activities, such as online shopping.

North Sunderland Family Zone will provide the tenants with a training course so that they can get optimum use from the computers.
