Internet accessibility and usability via mobile devices such as phones and PDAs could soon be made much easier.
Icann, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has approved a a .mobi domain that will be dedicated to mobile Internet content.
Most websites are currently formatted to allow for optimum viewing via a PC. However, the new domain offers to create a platform for web pages dedicated entirely to mobile devices.
A condition of buying and running a .mobi domain will be adoption of basic standards and templates that are intended to create a predictable experience for phone owners.
"We have to make this discoverable and predictable," said Mr Fant. "You need to have an experience that works on every device," said Rick Fant, spokesman for the MTLD, the organisation behind the new domain.
Europeans will be the first to get a chance to buy the new domains, followed by the US.
