Broadband Television is to be used to bring the Outer Hebrides into fuller interaction with the rest of the UK and the rest of the world.

The Connected Communities project is already looking to spread high performance broadband to the islands, and it is believed that Internet television could serve a multitude of important objectives in the area.

For this reason, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western isles Council) has commissioned a study of the development of broadband TV in the region, so as to make sure its appeal is maximised and the possibilities that it offers are effectively realised.

Councillor Archie Campbell, chairman of sustainable development, explained: " We think that Broadband Television could meet objectives in delivering public services, giving opportunities in training and employment, and offering a platform for providing new and exciting ways for communities throughout the Outer Hebrides to talk to each other and the wider world."

The study will look at the support for establishing a broadband TV service, the costs involved in setting up and running a service, who should be involved and the potential business model for its establishment and operations.

It will also be looking to use examples of how broadband television has been developed in other areas, particularly those with a strong voluntary and community emphasis and a focus on service delivery, as guidelines for the implementation of Internet TV in the islands.© Adfero Ltd
