The new phenomenon of making calls via broadband could drive down telephone bills across the UK.
According to the Times, more and more people across the UK switch to broadband, making calls via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is proving to be cheaper and, gradually, becoming more popular than using a traditional land line.
For those who use the phone a lot, particularly those who have to make calls abroad, VoIP is particularly suitable
Blair Wadman at Uswitch, a comparison website, predicted: "As internet telephony becomes part of the mainstream over the next year or so, it will get cheaper because providers will have to battle for business."
All that is required to access VoIP is downloadable software that converts the computer into a telephoine, as well as a microphone and speakers.
Calls to users of the same service are free with many providers, allowing people to chat at length while paying nothing except the cost of the broadband line rental.© Adfero Ltd
