Torbay Council is this using the Internet to revolutionise the voting process in the region.

From this week onwards, residents of Torbay will be able to confirm their electoral details online.

This important step will make the service offered by the council far more efficient and advantageous, as voters will now be able to confirm their details at a time suitable to them.

Electoral services manager Melissa Tucker said: "Information provided by householders is used to compile the 2005/2006 electoral register which will commence on December 1st."

Last year, the council brought in a new system enabling people to confirm their details via telephone.

As many as ten thousand households opted to confirm their details in this way, and the council are expecting the new online confirmation system to be similarly successful.

Ms tucker continued: "The automated telephone service will be in use once again following its successful introduction last year.

"We anticipate that with more and more people having easy access to a computer, the new Internet service will also prove popular as it is a very convenient way of confirming the details."
