New research shows that the Internet industry is thriving in the UK.

More than 150 websites with addresses ending in .uk are set up every hour, according to Nominet, the body that manages and oversees .uk domain name registrations.

This is clear evidence that many companies here in Britain believe that, with many people in Britain switching to broadband, the Internet could help to massively boost revenue.

And their convictions would appear to be well founded, as further evidence from Nominet shows that 47 per cent of people are more confident dealing online with companies that have a UK presence.

"The UK Internet industry is experiencing substantial growth as witnessed by the increase in registrations of .uk Internet addresses," Lesley Cowley, chief executive at Nominet, told BBC News.

"The combination of greater broadband take-up and the established popularity of .uk domain names demonstrates that the UK Internet industry is more buoyant than ever."

There are currently around four million .uk websites, with about 110,000 new sites being set up every month.

About 30 per cent of UK households and businesses now have broadband Internet, with it being anticipated that almost all of the population will have broadband access should they want it by the end of the year.© Adfero Ltd
