A new report suggests that the popularity of online advertising is set to grow at an astonishing rate.

Online advertising already was already estimated to be worth $9.3 billion (£5.1 billion) globally at the end of 2004.

However, a new report by JuipiterResearch shows that it is set to grow at an unprecedented rate to $18.9 billion (£10.4 billion) by 2010.

This data reveals the pivotal role that the Internet is set to play in the advertising industry over the next five years.

"There is phenomenal momentum behind search engine advertising," explained JupiterResearch senior analyst Gary Stein.

"The number of advertisers using search to market products continues to grow, as does the overall efficiency of the market-search engines are getting even better at making money off search engine results pages."

However, it is not only search engine advertising that is set to increase.

JuipiterResearch also forecasts a growth in other areas, such as classified advertising and rich and streaming media advertising.© Adfero Ltd
