More and more businesses are considering open-source software as a significant augmentation of their IT systems.

As it is free to download, open-source allows companies to make considerable savings, with its benefits becoming more and more apparent with every update, according to Techworld.

However, many companies believe that even more important than this is the improvement in performance that switching to open-source often entails.

Cost savings weren't really a factor in our decision to go open source," explained John Novak, chief information officer at hotel chain La Quinta.

"What got us into it was that it was simply the best technology open to us."

Many experts say that another one of open-source's benefits is that it means users are not tied to just one vendor.

With open-source now being used by prestigious companies such as the Italian bank Banca Popolare di Milano, its future would appear to be very bright indeed.
