Avon and Somerset Constabulary has redesigned its site to make it far more accessible to web users.

The redesign is not based so much on new technology, but simply on common sense restructuring, such as a much simpler navigation structure, clearer layout, and personalisation of the site to postcode area.

Given the great simplicity and yet great effectiveness of the improvements made to the website, it is more than conceivable that other forces across the UK will review the layout of their own sites and consider what basic changes they could make that dramatically improve their accessibility.

Force internet development manager Scott Fulton explained: "We have taken five years of experience, consultation and feedback on board when considering the content and design of our new site."

He added: "The new website strives to raise the bar even further and offer an unprecedented service to the public after having listened to its users and making use of new technologies."

So as to make the service even more accessible, Avon and Somerset Constabulary has also introduced Internet kiosk system that will allow residents who do not have Internet access at home to use the force's site as well.

An on-line property system is also being developed that will aim to reunite stolen and recovered property with its rightful owners much quicker than existing methods.
