The London borough of Croydon has taken over an e-government national project, originally run by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM).
The Environment and Community Online Residents E-services project (ENCORE), aims to provide local residents with access via the web to local authority services and information about environment and community-related issues.
The handing over of the project to Croydon marked the commitment of the ODPM to give local authorities control over national projects.
In a speech last year, e-government minister Jim Fitzpatrick said the transfer of the projects from national to local level would help spread and develop the various initiatives.
"The natural conclusion of the successful development of the national projects, is that local authorities own them, spread them, and reap the benefits."
Stephen Cahill from Croydon Council says he welcomes the ENCORE project to the borough.
"The ENCORE products have proved to be a really welcome addition at Croydon, and we are very pleased to be taking them forward, so that the benefits we have experienced can be shared with other local authorities and their citizens."
Other local authorities that have taken over national projects include the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, North Lincolnshire and Newham borough in London.
