A council has completed the first phase of one of the biggest e-government programmes in Wales.

Swansea Council has just signed a deal with the IT company Capgemini UK, marking the first part of an £83 million contract.

It is hoped this deal will boost efficiency and working practices through the use of the latest technological innovations.

"Our e-government programme is a massive investment in the future of the council and our customers," commented Mary Jones from the council cabinet.

"We will create a more modern and efficient organisation that meets the needs of all our customers."

Capgemini will initially design and construct IT systems to improve the efficiency of the council.

The running of the new IT systems will also be outsourced to the company for a ten-year period.

Ultimately, the second phase of the deal will see the introduction of a new call centre that will provide customers access to council services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
