A new website is to be launched in Wales that will inform organisations on how their undertakings can impact the health and well being of the wider community.
The Wales Centre for Health (WCfH) has launched whiasu.wales.nhs.uk in
conjunction with Cardiff University, to instruct organisations of the
social, economic and environmental consequences their actions can have.
The website offers guidance for a range of groups and employers, both within and outside the health sector, including a detailed insight into the Health Impact Assessment (HIA) approach.
The chair of the WCfH, Professor Mansel Aylward, explained: "The approach advocated by Health Impact Assessment is a common sense one; it's about looking for ways to maximise the opportunities for mental and physical well being, rather than simply fighting disease when it comes."
In addition, the site also features case studies of how the HIA approach has been used with success, and practical guides for organisations wanting to perform an assessment.
The site aims to further the good work done by the Welsh HIA Support Unit in educating councils on how activities as diverse as road planning, housing strategies and school dinner provision can all impact the health and well being of the wider community.
