An online atlas is being launched tomorrow in an effort to help protect the environment in the event of an oil spill at sea.
The web-based map will replace previous hard copies of the UK's coastline and will be used to plan for potential emergencies such as oil spills.
It is hoped that by going online the coastal and marine resource atlas can be regularly and easily updated and therefore be more effective.
It will contain a vast array of information on coastal and marine resources that are aimed at both government and industry bodies to improve coastline management.
However, it is not a substitute for expert environmental advice during an environmental incident, but is solely intended for strategic planning in preparation for a crisis.
The project has been the result of collaboration between eight different government groups responsible for various strands of rural policy-making and management.
It has cost approximately £200,000 and has taken two years to complete.
