A digitised version of Mozart's musical diary has gone online in celebration of the 250th anniversary of his birth.

The web-based journal takes people through the musical timeline of the composer's life, allowing users to hear the opening bars of many famous works at a click of a button.

"By turning the pages of this fascinating manuscript online, users will be able to follow the path of Mozart's life in his final years through the entries in his own 'musical diary' and marvel at the outpouring of sublime music produced in such a short space of time," explained Dr Rupert Ridgewell, British Library music curator.

The diary is accessible via the British Library website and it features 75 musical introductions to many of Mozart's most well-known pieces as well as rare compositions that have hardly ever been performed.
