Improved web accessibility has enabled many workers in the UK to retain

employment with a local firm, rather than having to move for the sake of their career.

As more local businesses enhance their communications through the net they are becoming increasingly capable of offering improved career opportunities to their employees, according to Telewest Business's North/South Collide study.

It appears that this has allowed employees to put their lifestyle first, as less are forced to move away from their home region or to commute in order to find an ideal career.

Stephen Beynon, managing director at Telewest Business, said: "As travel continues to be a frustration in many parts of the country and business communications services continue to improve, location has become less of a factor than at any time in history.

"While email, mobile phones and the Internet began this shift, new

communications services have the ability to completely change working

patterns and this will further liberate people's employment choices."

One of the key impacts of this is that people living in Scotland and the north of England are less inclined to move south in the search for preferable employment.

The report also showed that a company's culture and attitude are more

important than salary to the majority of employees, suggesting the pull that a smaller firm can have providing it shows an ambitious and pioneering approach in its usage of the Internet.
