Retailers could be missing out on valuable e-commerce by not taking advantage of search engine optimisation (SEO), Global Media has warned.

Search terms, such as "iPod", "Xbox" and "Christmas gift" are often entered into search engines by Internet users looking to find items in the run-up to the festive season, the company notes.

However, many high-street retailers are listed outside of the top 150 positions for these terms in search engines, indicating that companies need to improve their web presence, reported Brand Republic.

Neil McKay, Global Media's managing director, said: "There is no time to lose if retailers - whatever their size - want to take their share of the pre-Christmas spend.

"The e-shopper will not waste time scrolling through pages of suppliers to find what they're looking for."

Last week, an expert author at WebProNews claimed that websites with better accessibility features often rank more highly in search engines.

Brett Derricott remarked: "Search engines prefer websites that are built with accessibility in mind."
