The first GSCE to be submitted online has been created, which education officials hope will make the process simpler for teachers and students.

Environmental and Land-Based Science will be submitted over the Internet, with students able to submit photographs, presentations and video, in addition to written reports.

The exam itself takes the form of a multiple-choice test and ordinary questions.

Moderators will still be responsible for marking the written section of the online test, a computer program will handle the multiple choice section.

Patrick Craven, a spokesman for authority OCR, which is offering the test, stated that the advancement is a "landmark" in the future of education.

"With IT now playing such a significant role in education and indeed, employment, it's only right that the currency of communication between the student and exam board should also be digital," he remarked.

Mr Craven added that the move could transform "the future of school examinations".

Earlier this year, a trial number of students were able to receive their GCSE results online, with authority Edexcel hoping that this could speed up the process.
