Officials from Transport for London (TfL) are hoping that a new website could prevent many motorists from getting stuck in traffic.

The new website, Traffic News, provides Internet users with real-time information on roadworks, accidents and incidents, as well as public events, Publictechnology.net reports.

Furthermore, the site's creators hope that it has a high level of usability, offering functions such as zoom and search options, in addition to being able to read the messages on illuminated signs.

Phil Davies, director of traffic operations at TfL, said: "Traffic News is all about road users being given timely and accurate information, to take greater responsibility for their journeys.

"For the first time Traffic News will give London’s road users access to the detailed real time congestion information which is used by broadcasters on radio and TV traffic alerts."

Earlier this year, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council announced that it would be providing funding for a new project to monitor traffic, in a bid to create an online system allowing for more rapid responses to incidents by officials.
