Online charity YouthNet has been praised for the way it utilises the Internet to better the lives of young people.

The organisation, which claims to be the UK's first Internet charity, provides confidential advice to more than 50,000 young people each year, on subjects such as abuse and housing.

In addition to its own professional advisors, the charity has a number of partner bodies, such as Shelter, Brooke, SANELine, Addaction and Samaritans.

The Information Technologists' Company and Intellect, the UK IT trade association, recently held an IT charity ball, is which almost £50,000 was raised for the charity.

John Leighfield, master of the Information Technologists’ Company, said: "YouthNet's innovative use of technology is the foundation of its vital service to thousands of young people who need reliable, expert help and advice."

YouthNet, which operates primarily on the web, also has plans to expand its operations into hand-held devices such as mobile phones.

The charity explains the importance of using the Internet, stating: "Being online means we are always there when they need us most. We never close, we never switch off."
