Small businesses have been urged to embrace modern technology, as consumers are increasingly doing so.

Joseph Cardamone, of the United States Federation of Small Businesses, has warned that more consumers are looking to e-commerce as a way of getting the goods they need, writing in TechLINKS.

By failing to interact with this increasing demand, small businesses run the risk of losing out in the marketplace, the expert claims.

Mr Cardamone cites a recent study, which revealed that web-driven companies are twice as likely to consider themselves as a national, rather than local enterprise.

These businesses are also expecting greater expansion in the future.

"It is an exciting time for small businesses," he writes, commenting on the growth of the Internet as a busines tool.

"The time is now to seize this opportunity."

Recent research from the Small Business Service revealed that the number of small organisations in the UK is continuing to increase.
