The Welsh Assembly Government is hoping that it can boost adult education in the country by using e-learning techniques.

Government officials are concerned that due to heavy job losses in the manufacturing industry, particularly in the south-east, many adults could be left without the necessary skills to rejoin the workforce.

By utilising modern technology and e-learning, many could be provided with the necessary acumen to "improve their life chances", claimed minister for culture, Welsh language and sport Alun Pugh.

The University of Wales will spearhead the campaign which will be based in libraries, along with Newport City Council and Caerphilly County Council.

Christine Clark, the university's project manager, explained how the system would work.

"Each library will set aside branded gateways areas offering a range of resources, information, guidance, e-learning materials and computer access," she remarked.

"Learners will be able to call on front-line library staff, working closely with the project team, who will help them improve their information literacy skills."
