Offering websites with a high level of accessibility can help an organisation to reach a wider customer base, an expert at WebProNews has claimed.

Drew Stauffer, an author at the publication, stated that accessibility functions such as alt text will enable more viewers to access information on the site.

The expert also cited the recent lawsuit against US retailer Target as an example of disabled web users becoming disgruntled with an inaccessible website.

"Using web standard compliant code also allows you to reach the largest number of viewers with and without disabilities," he wrote.

Mr Stauffer added that organisations' websites cannot be successful unless designers pay attention to development and design - "a half-ass effort simply won't cut it".

An expert at Fry recently claimed that an accessible website can also be an advantage in the marketplace for organisations, as compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies makes them easier for search engines to navigate.
