Caerphilly County Borough Council is hoping to use the Internet to save money and offer better services to the community.

The council has opted to extend its e-procurement system, incorporating e-commerce and e-sourcing.

Officials hope that they can streamline the purchasing service online, enhancing the way in which it works with local businesses, which will boost the local economy, Publictechnology reports.

The move could also help to energise local trading and deliver best-value services throughout the authority.

Liz Lucas, head of procurement at Caerphilly County Borough Council, explained: "We saw an opportunity to use our e-procurement initiative for the good of the local community.

"We wanted to ensure that small local traders are treated equally."

Ms Lucas added that businesses could also use the Internet to find a wider customer base and develop, which could have a "direct, positive impact on our region".

Caerphilly council recently announced that it would be taking part in a Wales-wide initiative to provide e-learning opportunities in libraries, hoping to improve the life chances of many unskilled adults.
