Welsh education and local government sectors have been successfully connected to a new network, in a move that is expected to offer schoolchildren greater access to e-learning facilities.
The new SuperJanet 5 network has been gradually introduced across the UK by the United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association (Ukerna) and now it has been rolled out to the Lifelong Learning Network for Wales.
The move is expected to increase bandwidth, potentially improving accessibility for thousands of network and internet browsers.
Tim Marshall, chief executive officer of Ukerna, explained the range of applications offered by the network.
"It can be found at the very heart of a diverse array of activities from delivering e-learning and videoconferencing facilities to schoolchildren, hosting pioneering remote surgery techniques to supporting research into global warming," he said.
Earlier this month, the Welsh assembly government announced that it had made a range of savings as a result of using e-sourcing, e-procurement and an e-auction instead of high street options when buying in operational equipment.
