Renfrewshire Council is aiming to help communities by providing an online benefits service.

The new system, which allows Internet users to apply for housing and council tax benefits, could also see the council reap the benefits of efficiency savings, it claims.

Calculating the eligibility and entitlement of applicants, the new web portal is designed to make the process quicker, while still offering decisions based in law.

Elaine McCue, revenues and benefits manager at Renfrewshire Council, commented: "At Renfrewshire we are committed to delivering high-quality services that provide excellent public value."

The official added that the system would be of benefit to "the most disadvantaged members of our communities", as they would have quick access to the help they require.

According to a recent study from the Scottish executive, east Renfrewshire is the hardest place in Scotland to find a home, the Herald reports.
