The Tate has generated a large amount of public interest through its online portal, it has announced.

By investing in its website, Tate Online, the organisation has seen a 41 per cent increase in the number of visitors from last year, PublicTechnology reports.

In October 2006, more than one million unique visitors logged onto the site, a success which is the direct results of commitment to the online portal, claims director Will Gompertz.

"Nearly 1.2 million unique visitors is a fabulous result and I think demonstrates the additional energy and commitment from Tate into our online presence," said Mr Gompertz.

Arts Council England recently stated that a number of websites which received public funding could become more accountable if they are found to have too little "value".

The body states that areas such as visitor numbers, accessibility and barriers, and benefit to society will determine the effectiveness of a site.
