Usability is a growing concern among web designers, one expert has claimed.

Lisa Herrod, a senior usability consultant, has stated that a wider range of roles now require designers to have a greater understanding of the field, writing in SitePoint.

Additionally, the expert also noted that a greater emphasis is put on user-focussed web design in discussion groups and social networking sites.

Ms Herrod explained: "What I’m talking about here is the need for a focus on usability within web teams from the beginning of a project, right across all roles.

"Clearly employers are looking for designers and developers with usability skills."

The expert continues that a "new school" approach to web usability means that web practitioners need a greater technical knowledge of the Internet - which in turn creates more user-friendly sites.

Earlier this month, the Usability Professionals Association held an international day celebrating the field, which aimed to highlight its importance for inclusion in society.
