The Youth Hostels Association (YHA) is hoping to generate extra revenue by improving the accessibility of its website.
In addition, the group hopes that it can offer a better service to Internet users, particularly those with special requirements, Internet Travel News reports.
The new website will be compliant with accessibility standards, which include features for individuals with visual impairments.
Duncan Simpson, head of communications at YHA, commented: "YHA has decided to overhaul its website to directly challenge the sometimes poor market perception of hostelling which arises from a misunderstanding of what YHA represents."
He added that the association offers flexible, high-quality accommodation, with the new website better able to communicate this to potential visitors.
The new site will be delivered in several phases, the first scheduled for with December 2006.
YHA is supported by around 2,000 voluntary workers and funds a number of charitable causes, including its Give Us a Break scheme for disadvantaged youngsters.
