A member of the Guild of Accessible Web Designers (GAWD) has launched an e-petition to the prime minister's office over accessibility.
Calling upon government websites to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) level AA from launch, the petition has so far attracted 264 signatures.
The petition reads: "We the undersigned petition the prime minister to ensure that any website launched by the government complies with accessibility standards (WCAG AA at least)."
Additionally, the petitioner describes as "inexcusable" the government's provision of online services which is inaccessible to some UK citizens,
The e-petition, lodged by GAWD member Ian Fenn, has also won the support of Peter Abrahams, practice leader of Bloor Research.
According to a report on IT-Directors, Mr Abrahams has urged individuals concerned about web accessibility to sign the petition online.
Mr Abrahams noted that the petition will need more than 1,000 signatures to be regarded as "credible".
