Local government bodies could make efficiency savings by taking advantage of e-government service provision on their websites, a government expert has claimed.

By enabling service users to conduct their own enquiries online, rather than fielding enquiries over the phone, government bodies cut could costs significantly, stated e-government specialist David Hunter.

Mr Hunter is the author of a recent report from the Society of Information Technology Management - the professional association of ICT managers in the public sector.

On average, calls to councils cost around £1.50 to action, whereas online provision costs 12p, the expert asserted.

Additionally, the report found that workers are spending time researching information to help the public which is already clearly available on websites.

Mr Hunter remarked: "These issues are important, because in future, success in managing contact with citizens will increasingly depend on an integrated, multi-channel approach."
