Web developers have been warned that Flash and Ajax could have a negative impact upon a site's usability.
Additionally, over-using the technology could also hamper a site's search engine performance, claimed expert Shari Thurrow, writing on ClickZ.
Poor use of Flash could potentially result in confusion for both users and search engines, although good use can help to create a better online experience, she said.
The expert advised that although Flash and Ajax-enabled websites offer the opportunity to create an "enhanced user experience", they must be employed judiciously - taking into account the audience's needs.
"Analyse your target audience's search behaviour," she remarked.
"If you find your target audience genuinely wants the enhanced experience, then by all means give it to them."
Recently, search engine expert Kimberley Krause Berg wrote in WebProNews that Flash can often be used in "smart ways" and can still enable search optimisation.
