The Internet makes life easier for many UK residents, according to a study by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
A large number of Britons are turning to the web to simplify day-to-day activities such as shopping and banking, the survey has revealed.
Internet users choose to complete a number of tasks via the web, with researching, booking a holiday and banking cited as the most popular options.
Some 86 per cent of Internet users find online banking to be an easier method of managing their finances than visiting a branch, while 77 per cent prefer completing tax returns online.
HMRC commented: "More than nine million people need to fill in a tax return each year and over two million do it online.
"With instant tax calculations, state of the art security and a stop and start function, it's an appealing alternative for anyone."
Earlier this year, Orange broadband conducted research which found that many UK residents are also turning to the Internet as a means of generating additional cash.
