The Internet is to help raise awareness of important health issues as part of a new Europe-wide project.

The "Health in Europe" project has just been launched as a multimedia initiative aiming to create a media network of information, including television documentaries, radio broadcasts and Internet articles.

Speaking at the launch this week, European Union commissioner for health Markos Kyrianou said the new service will provide relevant and important information from a European perspective.

"There is a need for better and more widespread information about health issues in Europe," he said.

"This partnership of TV and radio networks across Europe through the European Broadcasting Union will help keep citizens, and in particular patients and health professionals, informed on public health issues with a European dimension."

He added that it was essential to provide all European citizens with solid scientific health news using a language they could understand.

It is hoped the scheme will also be interactive, particularly on the web where participants will be able to exchange information.

A number of major European broadcasters are already involved in the initiative, including Radio France International, Radio Netherlands and Radio Prague.

The various media outlets will be in charge of creating TV documentaries, radio programmes and magazine articles on issues including obesity, addictions and mental health.
