The Corporation of the City of London has announced plans to install blanket Wi-Fi coverage in the capital's Square Mile.
Implementation will take place in collaboration with European wireless Internet provider The Cloud, which was behind the recent provision of Wi-Fi in London's Canary Wharf business district.
The corporation hopes that access will be available within six months after the installation of equipment on lampposts and street signs.
The project will mean that anyone with a wireless-enabled device, such as a laptop or PDA, will be able get online while they are in the City.
Chairman of the City of London's Policy Committee, Michael Snyder, said: "We feel it is important to provide this technology to maintain our position as the world's leading international financial centre.
"We are responding to the increasing time pressures faced by City workers by providing the technology for them to stay up to date."
