A worldwide "blogathon" will take place tomorrow to promote the safer use of the Internet.

The European Union's network for Internet safety awareness has created the blog and is inviting various organisations that promote Internet safety to post entries on it.

Individual visitors to the site will also be encouraged to post their responses.

The Blogathon has been set up in aid of Safer Internet Day on February 7th, with the aim of raising awareness among young people, parents and teachers on how to make the most of the Internet without accessing unsuitable or dangerous material.

It will also be encouraging young people to share their attitudes and experiences of web-based technology.

This year's event follows on from the success of Safer Internet Day 2005 where 65 different organisations took part in a storytelling competition for children.

This year, it was thought the "blog" was the most suitable vehicle to convey important messages about Internet safety.

"Blogs are a popular new way of communicating for young people and all age groups, so it is appropriate that the Insafe network is using a blog on Safer Internet Day to show how using the Internet can be enjoyable," explained Viviane Reding, the European commissioner for information society and media.

Around 70,000 new blogs are created everyday, according to blog tracking site Technorati. And approximately a third of young people publish their own work online via a blog or personal website, reported a recent poll by the Guardian.
