Spending on web-based advertising soared in 2005, far exceeding expenditure in the previous year, new figures reveal.

Advertisers spent 73 per cent more on their online campaigning budgets last year than in 2004, according to research by the Advertising Association.

The online advertising business splits into two categories, with online classified advertising worth in the realm of £748 million.

Web-based display advertising, such as online banners, is worth £383 million.

The report suggests the Internet sector is fast becoming the leading force in the media world, with declining advertising budgets becoming the trend in print.

Overall, taking into account all forms of advertising, expenditure for 2005 rose marginally by 2.1 per cent, which is a slower rate of growth compared to the previous 12 months.
