An online map of Kensington and Chelsea that provides travel information for the London borough has been granted a prestigious award in recognition of its high usability.
The British Cartographic Society bestowed its Better Mapping award upon the bespoke map because of its clarity and user-friendliness, and for the way it combined the Ordnance Survey MasterMap dataset with information from a range of different sources.
The society described the map as "imaginative and useful", and described its format as "aesthetically pleasing" and as sitting "well within the borough's overall travel-mapping application".
David Campion, council member and chairman of the Computer and Communications Advisory Group, commented: "We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the British Cartographic Society for a map that is ultimately easy to use for both residents and visitors.
"By using 2D mapping and ground level 3D illustrations we provide several useful - and very realistic - perspectives of the borough making mapping your route that much easier. It is a most welcome additional facility under our visitor management strategy."
The website allows visitors to easily search, view and query travel services in the borough in either a text or map-based format, giving fast and accurate access to travel and service information in an attractive format.
It gives clear travel information, such as on the location of bicycle parking bays, blue badge parking bays for people with disabilities, and bus and tube routes.
