A website has been set up to encourage people to chat about issues involving the European community.

The site's creation follows the votes cast last year against the proposed European Constitution by both French and Dutch citizens.

It is hoped that through opening channels of communication with European citizens via the Internet, concerns over the constitution can be raised and Europe's future redefined.

Margot Wallstrom, the EU's executive vice-president for communications said that the site aims to find out why people "lost confidence" in the European Union.

She says that she often hears that people feel the EU has become too complex and unwieldy and she wants to know how the general public see the role of the EU in the future.

People from across union are invited to contribute to the Debate Europe site, giving their opinion on issues such as unemployment, healthcare, pensions, education and environmental issues.
