Directgov, the main online source of information on government services, is to be taken over by the Central Office of Information (COI).
The online portal has been running under the control of the e-government department since its launch in 2004.
However it is now felt that the COI is in a better position to ensure the continued delivery of the service, as it specialises in managing marketing and information campaigns for the government.
The changeover will come into effect from April 1st and Jim Murphy, cabinet minister for Directgov believes the web facility will go from "strength to strength".
"Whilst Directgov remains a key component of transformational government it is now time to move it from the strategic centre of the Cabinet Office into a delivery arm of government," he explained.
Directgov acts as a central point of information for all public services across eleven Whitehall departments, providing easily accessible information for the public.
People can look for details of a local childminder online, apply for car tax or check times of local transport, among many other services.
