The leadership of the government's connect programme has been taken over by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.

The local e-government project was launched last year under the guidance of Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council with the initial aim to find out where local authority service delivery could be improved.

It then entered a second phase of development in October 2005 where it looked at developing pilot projects of the various ideas and concepts formulated during the initial stage of the programme.

Local e-government minister Jim Fitzpatrick hopes that with Tameside at the helm, the scheme will be able to start delivering products "that would be of real value to local authorites".

He also congratulated Bolton Council for their efforts during the preliminary stages of the project.

Janet Callender, the chief executive of Tameside said she was "thrilled" that her council had been given the opportunity to further develop the project.

She added that the local authority,"will ensure that the emerging offering will be relevant to and affordable by all local authorities".
