Members of the public can help shape the government's reform of the pensions system by getting online and voicing their opinions.

The Department for Work and Pensions has launched an online consultation in order to develop a long-term solution to the impeding pensions crisis.

People are invited to give their opinions on the proposals put forward by the Pensions Commission, such as the possibility of raising the state pension age or ensuring people are automatically enrolled into a National Pension Savings Scheme.

Stephen Timms, pensions reform minister, said that with ten million people not saving towards retirement, it is important that everyone helps build a "national consensus" on the future of pensions.

'Retirement may be a long way off for many but we need to raise awareness around pensions and help people to understand the difficult choices and trade offs involved," he explained.

"The commission was clear that while there is not a crisis today, we need to take action to ensure a fair and adequate retirement income for all in the future.

'The government can't do this alone. In order to deliver a lasting pensions settlement, everyone's views must count," he concluded.

To further aid the public's understanding of the issues, the website also includes video footage of the pensions commission chairman, Adair Turner, as he outlined the commission's proposals for reform.
