A new website has been created to help encourage debate on the future of energy in the UK, in light of increasing costs.

The site, created by the independent consumer watchdog energywatch, will feature a mixture of facts, opinion and online polls.

Called energyfuture, it aims to provide the public with a way of contributing to the decision-making process in the lead-up to the government's energy review.

The website was launched as the results of a poll by the watchdog were revealed, showing 85 per cent of consumers were worried about energy prices and 99 per cent were taking measures to conserve energy at home.

Chief executive for energywatch, Allan Asher believes consumers are "critical" to finding a solution to the potential energy crisis.

"And through energyfuture's opinion pieces, the forum and straw polls, we also hope the website becomes a barometer that informs decision makers as well as consumers," Mr Asher said.

Energy minister Malcolm Wicks has also praised the new site, saying it will make a "valuable contribution" to finding new sources of energy and conserving current supplies.
