A new website that aims to provide easily accessible information on the European Union (EU) has been launched.

The EU site, launched by UK minister for Europe Douglas Alexander, aims to meet the public's desire for more information on a number of EU projects and programmes as well as encouraging open debate on the role of the union.

The new site, www.europe.gov.uk, was developed after results from a recent Eurobarometer poll revealed that around 60 per cent of people would welcome more information about the EU.

"I hope that this new website will not only help meet the public's desire for more information about the EU but will encourage and stimulate public debate on Europe," said Mr Alexander.

He added: "The EU has brought many benefits to the United Kingdom, but there are many myths too. This website is one resource in helping to cut through those myths, so that people can see the facts for themselves and make up their own minds."
