Every court in England and Wales is now equipped with an award-winning computer system that provides easy and accessible information on court hearings.
Known as Xhibit, the system gives regular updates on the progress of cases, accessible to the police, victims and witnesses involved.
The updates can be sent by text, email or pager and members of the public can monitor the hearings online or on public display screens found in the court buildings.
The final system was installed in Bolton, bringing to an end the 16-month project to bring the technology to all 99 courts in England and Wales.
Speaking about the project, the secretary of state for constitutional affairs and lord chancellor, Lord Falconer said the system would make a positive impact on people dealing with the court system.
"Xhibit means that witnesses, including the police, can be contacted by mobile phone, fax or telephone, or can go online to find out how their case is progressing," he explained.
"Giving evidence in court is daunting at the best of times, but even more so if a witness has to wait for an unpredictable length of time," he added.
He went on to say how the computer system could help police and witness groups better manage their time, so they can attend court only when necessary.
