The telecoms company BT has secured agreements with six UK cities to provide extensive wireless networks.

Public organisations, private firms and the public in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff and the Westminster borough in London will have access to state-of-the-art Wi-Fi Internet technology and applications.

These wireless outlets can be used to find out local information, to communicate while on the move and to view the latest news and entertainment.

BT said the six cities were committed to the possibilities the technology will bring, with Westminster having its existing network extended, and it is looking to agree deals with many others.

Steve Andrews, head of BT's converged communications services, said: "The wireless city initiatives offer wide area wireless broadband access across metropolitan areas, enabling people to use the network on a range of devices for entertainment, education and communication, such as email, video and voice calls, even when they're on the move.

"Our networks will make sure customers are connected at all times, but all people will notice is how valuable the services are, such as knowing where to park, access to tourist information and public services."
