High Peak Borough Council has applied for government funding to establish wireless digital technology in the borough's towns and villages.

The Parish Networks project, organised by a partnership of High Peak Borough Council, Hayfield Development Trust, Hayfield Parish Council and Derbyshire County Council, aims to improve the quality of life for residents.

A community broadband mesh, developed by public, voluntary and business groups, has been successfully running in the Hayfield area for three years and if the government funding is granted, the partnership will refine this system and install it in many other parts of High Peak.

The leader of High Peak Borough Council, councillor David Lomax, believes that this project would help to combat the disadvantages faced by residents and businesses based in High Peak's rural areas.

He said: "If we can reduce the need for people to leave rural locations for work, then it stands to reason that spending will be retained in the community.

"This means that rural businesses will be supported, new job opportunities will be created, travel will be reduced and there will be a stronger community spirit."
