The European commission (EC) has announced that its Biometrics Portal (EBP), which has been running for over half a year, is being widely used.

Website statistics up to April 2006, covering the first sixth months of operation, revealed that 40,000 pages are visited every month on average.

This portal, developed by using open source components, has been established to enable experts from industry, governments and universities across the EU to share news, reports and seminar/workshop details about biometrics. EBP access and membership are free of charge.

However, while the EBP is aimed at the European industry, it also displays information from non-European countries.

In addition, people in the industry can detail their experiences to give people examples of best practice and things to avoid doing.

The EC has noted that the vast majority of the information provided was produced to offer valuable technical, legal and ethical data and debate, as opposed to just giving opinions.
