Hastings Borough Council believes its website is able to cope with the expected demand from the public to use online council services following the launch of a national campaign.

The Connect to your Council programme developed by the Department for Communities and Local Government (formerly the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) aims to get a larger number of people using services available on their local council website.

From a single website, people can type in their postcode and go directly to their local council resource and Hastings Borough Council said it now has a wide range of services people can access online.

These include downloading job applications, paying council tax, finding out your rubbish collection day and reporting an abandoned vehicle.

Councillor Joy Waite, lead member for communications and organisational development, said: "We have worked hard to make our website as useful as possible for residents, maximising the number of transactions that take place online, saving residents time and inconvenience.

"We know our website is already popular, last year there were more than 960,000 hits and more than five million pages of information served."
